Terrace Minor Hockey Association

Our History

The Terrace and District Minor Hockey Association (as it was then known) began with the opening of the Terrace Arena in September of 1972. At that time the closest rink was in Kitimat, some 40 miles away. There were over 600 kids registered that year under president Mr. Rick Olson. All divisions were, shall we say, stuffed to the maximum. Registration has gone up and down over the years as the economy in every resource based town is subject to fluctuations. From the beginning, TMHA has placed an emphasis on player development and tried to maintain an even balance between the demands of competitive hockey and the need to provide an opportunity for recreational hockey for all ages. We prefer to measure the success of our program in numbers of how many kids return the next year to play again.

Although we are justifiably proud of our past accomplishments ( 3 provincial "AAA" Championships and a berth in the Air Canada Cup National Midget Championship), we are also proud of our program of development and our strong pool of volunteer coaches, division heads, officials and executive members.

Due to limited ice time and the pressures of having only 1 ice sheet available to us, we have been rather creative in handling our registration. We send out forms after the season ends and guarantee a spot for each past player up to a point in the summer. If any openings develop, these are filled in a rather quick open registration each year during our annual hockey school. Unfortunately, some children have to "wait listed" each year and the executive attempt to find a place for them to squeeze in. It's not always successful, but we will try our best not to turn players away.

Our annual Summer Hockey School is a real source of pride to us. Thanks in large part to Mr. Cliff Sharples and Mr. Jake DeJong, this school has been running for the past ten years and is now staffed almost entirely by TMHA graduates from either Pro, Semi-pro, junior or college ranks. We pride ourselves on the recreational aspect of our school. This is a place for kids to learn the skills and have fun while doing so. This year will mark the second year that we have partnered with the City of Terrace Parks and Recreation Department in providing a full day program for our participants including aerobic training, soccer and outdoor programs designed for fun and fitness. If you are interested in attending this reasonably priced hockey school in the summer of 1999, please contact Mr. Brian Downie at 250-635-5617.
